Linds
Lakers take over 5th and 6th at ABC's
[Apr. 28, 2001 submitted by Bob Spargalo] For those of
you interested in ABC Tournament news, Linds Lakers #1 and Linds Lakers #2
from Minneapolis moved into fifth and seventh places, respectively, with
3,194 and 3,147 in Team Event at the ABC Championships Tournament in Reno,
Nev., on Tuesday evening.
Captain Tom Corbett, Coon Rapids, Minn., handles all the entries and
travel arrangements for both teams as well as dividing the 10 men into two
teams. "The guys are matched up by achievements in past
tournaments," said Corbett.
"We bowl in a lot of local tournaments as well as the ABC."
Linds Lakers #1 started off slow with 923. They improved to 1,095
in the second game and poured it on in the final game for 1,176. Todd
Savoy, Superior, Wis., led the way with 696. Savoy is a two-time ABC Team
champion, 984 and 1988, and Team All Events champion in 1984 and 1985. Sam
Lantto, Eden Prairie, Minn., a member of Team USA in 1993 and 1994, shot
651, as did John Eiss of Long Lake, Minn., a member of Team USA in 1992,
1995 and 1999.
Gary Green, Houlton, Wis., rolled 648 and Charles Vashaw, Deephaven,
Minn., struggled with carrying and missed three single pin spares for 548.
Linds Lakers #2, bowling on the same pair of lanes, were more consistent
but ended up 47 pins behind their compatriots. The team shot 1,038, 1,045
and 1,064. Robert Miller, Fridley, Minn., was high on the team with 703,
followed by Corbett with 666. Scott Sodergren, Minneapolis, carved out
621, while David Hoppenrath, St. Paul, Minn., had 589. Tom Havlish,
Minneapolis, had opened with 167, but salvaged 568.
Linds Lakers #1 and #2 are 10 experienced tournament bowlers. Lantto is
the youngest bowler at age 37 and Havlish is the elder statesman at 51. As
a group, the Linds Lakers have bowled more than 200 ABC Championships.
"We really bowl as one team," said Corbett. "We all help
one another line up."
Linds Lakers #1 took to the lanes again Wednesday afternoon and ended
up third in Team All Events with 9,539. Todd Savoy had 2,003 for his nine
games, John Eiss had 1,969 and Sam Lantto had 1,898. Gary Green shot
1,882, while Charles Vashaw finished with 1,787.
John Eiss, winner of several international gold and silver medals said,
"I'm still looking for that final dream in bowling, an ABC eagle
(title)."
There's always a chance for bowlers of this high caliber who are so
supportive of one another. They make the tournament a true team
experience.

14, 2001 MEMBERS OF CANADIAN
CONTINGENT TAKE OVER SECOND AND TIE FOR NINTH IN SINGLES Two
Canadian bowlers moved into the top 10 in Regular Singles at the ABC
Championships Tournament in Reno Nev., on Tuesday. Carmine Perrone,
Windsor, Ont., took over second place with games of 219, 268 and 269 for a
756 series. Wayne Tyler, also of Windsor, Ont., rolled games of 227, 235
and 254 for a series of 716 to tie for ninth with Tom Landreman of Racine
Wis. The pair are members of a 20 bowler group that made the trip from
Canada. The group was organized by Michael Snow, who has made it an annual
event for Windsor area bowlers for 10 years. "Being so close to
Detroit we really enjoy the tenpin game," explained Tyler, "We
are able to compete against the Detroit bowlers and our lanes are very
similar. When you get further north in Canada it is more five-pin bowling
and duckpins. "I picked up the game from my dad when I was four years
old and was the All City Junior Bowler of the year for three years from
when I was 17 to 19,"stated Perrone, " My first 300 game has
been the highlight of my career and one of my biggest thrills is bowling
in the National Bowling Stadium, this place is just unbelievable."
"The ABC is the highlight of the year for me," said Tyler,
"I love the atmosphere and everyone in our group is always cheering
for each other. We are just a group of regular guys who all have jobs but
we really enjoy the camaraderie and atmosphere of the tournament. Submitted by
