Should the sport be set up with a 20-frame game and a maximum score of 200, or a 10-frame game and a maximum score of 300? How long should a lane be? How tall should a bowling pin be?

We might still be asking these questions if it hadn't been for a gathering of smart, progressive men at New York City's Beethoven Hall on Sept. 9, 1895. That meeting marked the birth of the ABC.'

THE ABC MISSION STATEMENT

  • The American Bowling Congress Is a service-oriented sports organization of tenpin bowlers consisting of a national board of directors and an administrative staff, in conjunction with local, state and provincial associations

  • The ABC strives to instill respect for the organization and pride in membership without regard to race, color, religion, age or national origin.

  • The ABCs aim is to promote, with all bowling integers, the universal appeal of tenpin bowling and to provide quality programs and services to its members.
  • The ABC, in partnership with the Women's International Bowling Congress, determines specifications for bowling lanes and equipment to provide for standardization and to maintain the integrity of the sport worldwide.
  • The ABC pledges to maintain the strength of the organization and to engage in other endeavors in order to reduce dependence on membership dues.
